America – Born in the scenic Sinja Valley of Jumla, Nepal, Kismat Khatri, son of Mr. Parek Raj Khatri and Mrs. Pramila Khatri, grew up surrounded by the serene landscapes and rich history of his homeland. Sinja Valley, known as the cradle of the Khas Nepali language, is not only the birthplace of Nepal’s national language but also the ancient capital of the Khas Kingdom. This remarkable region, where rice cultivation occurs at the world’s highest elevation of 3,050 meters, deeply influenced Kismat’s values and aspirations.

Kismat’s father, Parek Raj Khatri, often lived alone to fulfill his professional responsibilities, but he never compromised on providing the best education and a bright future for his sons. To ensure proper care and guidance, his mother, Pramila Khatri, always stayed with her children, creating an environment filled with love, affection, and inspiration.
Despite facing personal challenges, both parents prioritized the importance of education for Kismat and his brother, guiding them with unwavering dedication and sacrifice every step of the way. Their hard work, commitment, and unconditional love became the greatest sources of inspiration in Kismat’s life. Even today, Kismat considers his father and mother his lifelong role models and ideal figures.

Kismat’s grandmother, Ratna Sila Khatri, also played a profound role in shaping his character. She was a pillar of wisdom and compassion whose kind words and ability to connect with people left a lasting impression on him. Growing up, Kismat was inspired by her resilience and her belief that everyone deserved to be treated with kindness. Her stories of uniting their large family and her unwavering patience taught Kismat the values of empathy and harmony, shaping him into someone who is loved by all, both within and beyond the Khatri family.
Kismat’s academic achievements were equally remarkable. He topped the entire Jumla district in Nepal’s School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exam in 2015. After securing a government scholarship, he attended Prasadi Academy for high school, graduating with distinction in 2017. His determination to pursue higher education earned him the prestigious Compex Scholarship from the Indian Embassy in Nepal, enabling him to study Computer Science and Engineering at Vellore Institute of Technology, India. Although the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his on-campus experience, Kismat remained resolute, deciding to pursue a Master’s in Data Science at George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, D.C., with a 75% scholarship.
During his time at GWU, Kismat faced one of the most challenging moments of his life. Speaking with his grandmother every night before bed was a comforting ritual, and he couldn’t sleep without hearing her voice. One morning, after their nightly call, he was unable to reach his family. Hours later, he learned that his grandmother was hospitalized. His family reassured him that she would soon be discharged. However, her condition unexpectedly worsened. Just as Kismat was preparing to book a ticket to Nepal, he received the devastating news of her passing.

The loss deeply affected him. Overwhelmed by grief, Kismat locked himself in his room for two months, isolating himself from everyone. Even today, he feels her presence and often hears her voice echoing in his ears. Despite this profound sorrow, her teachings about resilience, kindness, and patience gave him the strength to continue his journey with determination and compassion.
At GWU, Kismat excelled in both academics and research, balancing roles as a research assistant, teaching assistant, and math tutor. He contributed significantly to a capstone project in partnership with the World Bank’s Data Lab, where he developed data-driven solutions addressing global challenges. He guides his entire family and relatives, including siblings, along with pursuing his studies. His enthusiasm and motivation have also enabled them to reach places nationally and internationally.

After completing his Master’s degree, Kismat began his professional career as a Data Consultant at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and later advanced to his current role as a Data Scientist at the World Bank Group. At the World Bank, Kismat focuses on developing AI-powered tools that enhance operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making. Beyond his work within the organization, he collaborates with his team on various AI projects for external clients, leveraging advanced technologies to create innovative solutions that solve complex challenges.
Looking ahead to 2025, Kismat plans to collaborate with Cornell University on an AI project aimed at supporting smallholder farmers through agricultural extension services. He also envisions expanding opportunities for students at GWU by facilitating capstone projects in partnership with the World Bank. Additionally, he is focused on launching his own AI startup, leveraging his expertise to help businesses achieve sustainable growth through advanced technological solutions.

From the historic Sinja Valley of Jumla, the birthplace of Nepal’s national language, to the global stage, Kismat Khatri’s journey is a testament to resilience, ambition, and the transformative power of education and innovation. Inspired by his grandmother’s wisdom and love, and supported by the sacrifices of his parents, Kismat continues to carry forward the values of kindness and determination. His story inspires countless individuals, proving that dreams fueled by hard work and compassion can transcend boundaries to create a lasting impact.
Later, he express his desire to return to Nepal and use his knowledge to contribute to his own country.
